Rob McIntyre in a tussle on the main straight on his way to the bronze medal in the men’s class 5 1500m at the 1984 summer Paralympics. In 1984 racing chairs were getting lighter and thinner, with most athletes in this race (other than McIntyre) using large, thin front wheels and all but one with cambered rear wheels. However, there were still innovations to be made, including changing the ‘feet first’ sitting position.
