Australian athlete Wayne Patchett competed in the Men’s Class 1A discus event, for athletes with quadriplegia, at the 1980 summer Paralympics. Compared with the photo of Eric Russell – an athlete with paraplegia – at the same Games, Patchett obviously has much less strength and control in his trunk, arms and hands. Patchett won three gold medals in field events – the Class 1A shot put, discus and club throw events. He was Australia’s most successful athlete at the 1980 Games.
