This souvenir badge was produced as a ‘swap’ item for the 1984 Australian Paralympic Team. The ‘boxing kangaroo‘ became an Australian sporting symbol in 1983 when the Australia II team, which won the America’s Cup, used a red-gloved, yellow, boxing kangaroo on a green background as its ‘battle flag’. Alan Bond (owner of Australia II) licensed it for mass production. The Australian Olympic Committee bought the rights to the Boxing Kangaroo image during the late 1980s. In 1984 the Australian Paralympic team appropriated the general concept, adapted for wheelchair sport.
