The introduction of events for amputee athletes at the 1976 summer Paralympics provided the impetus for competition in Australia for amputee athletes and the formation of the Amputee Sporting Association of Australia. At the 1976 Paralympics, Australia had just one amputee competitor. By 1984, amputee athletes formed the largest contingent of the Australian Team in New York and the most successful.
