Powerlifting contributed to the medal tally through veteran Brian McNicholl

The Australian powerlifting team at the Atlanta Paralympic Games consisted of four athletes and new coach Blagoi Blagoiev, who came to coaching after a career as a leading international weightlifter. Veteran Brian McNicholl won a silver medal. McNicholl first competed for New Zealand at the 1976 Games before moving to Australia and donning the green and gold for a further 5 Games. Two years out from Atlanta, he set a world record, bench pressing 230kg. He was still ranked second in the world when he retired due to injury in 1999.
