The 1976 Paralympics were the first summer Games with events for athletes with limb deficiencies (amputees). The technology for sport prosthetics was in its infancy, as this gallery demonstrates – from prosthetic legs held in place with a laced leather sleeve or belts and buckles, to double leg amputees running with the aid of walking sticks.
