GALLERY: How to stabilise a thrower’s chair

In 1972, athletes in throws events competed in their day chair or racing chair. It was still some time before specialist throwing chairs and frames replaced wheelchairs. This forces generated by the thrower would topple the chair if it wasn’t restrained in some way. The 1972 Games was the first in which chairs were tied down to anchors bolted into the throwing circle. Previously, Team officials sat on the ground behind the thrower and held the chair in place.
