Australian wheelchair athlete Robert McIntyre (left, yellow) goes head to head against Canadian athlete Mel Fitzgerald on his way to a bronze medal in the wheelchair slalom event at the 1980 summer Paralympics. Previously, the wheelchair slalom was run individually against the clock, usually on a carpark, but going head to head added an exciting, competitive element to the event. McIntyre competed in athletics and coached and played in the basketball team at the Games. Over his career at five Paralympics, he won 6 medals in athletics, including medals in wheelchair slalom at three Games from 1968 to 1980.
