Did spectators pay extra for a track-side view?
Joe Egan competes in the A4 long jump event at the 1984 summer Paralympics. Nowadays, with the advent of carbon fibre prosthetics, or blades, most lower leg amputees take off on their prosthetic leg. However, in 1984 the athlete’s prosthetic leg didn’t store any kinetic energy, so jumping off the natural leg was the only option. Egan finished 6th of 19 competitors, with a jump of 4.74m. And what about the spectator family standing, literally, at the edge of the landing pit?
