Clohessy and Harry start Australia’s gold rush

Paul Clohessy and his sighted pilot Darren Harry cross the line ahead of their Japanese opponents Shigeo Yoshihara and Koichi Mizusawa in the gold medal race of the men’s tandem sprint event at the Sydney summer Paralympics. Clohessy and Harry won the gold medal. The tandem sprint event is conducted under the same rules as the able-bodied sprint event. However, great communication is required between the sighted pilot at the front of the bike and the vision impaired ‘stoker’ at the back to produce sudden bursts of speed or to slow down at just the right moment in this very tactical event.
