Carolyn Connors guided to the start of the 100m freestyle

Australian vision impaired swimmer Carolyn Connors (centre) is guided out by her coach to the start of the women’s class A 100m freestyle at the 1980 summer Paralympics. Blind swimmers such as Connors count their strokes and are tapped on the head by a team staff member just before they reach the end of the pool so that they can make their turns and finishes. Connors was one of only two female Australian swimmers at the Games. She won silver in the 100m freestyle, and two silver and one bronze medal in total at the Games.
