Danni Di Toro came into the Athens summer Paralympics ranked as one of the leading female players in wheelchair tennis but with just one Paralympic medal to her name – doubles silver at the 2000 Games. She left Athens with that elusive singles medal. After losing a tight three setter in the semi-final, Di Toro defeated Florence Gravellier in three sets to return from Athens with a bronze medal. As with David Hall in the men’s game, Di Toro was the anchor of the Australian women’s wheelchair tennis program for more than 20 years, from 1989 to her second, permanent retirement from the sport in 2011.
