Angie McReynolds concentrates as she releases the ball

Australian boccia player Angie McReynolds is full of concentration as she releases the ball during play at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. Ramp players use voice, eyes or head movements to direct a ramp assistant to position a ramp. The assistant places the ball at the top of the ramp and it is released by the player, often using a ‘wand’ attached to their head or – if they are able – with their hand. The ramp assistant may not look at the field of play during positioning and must re-set the ramp between each shot. McReynolds’ ramp assistant was Joan Stevens, the team’s head coach and the key mover in boccia in Australia at the time. McReynolds lost all three of her matches in pool play and did not advance.
